Chamber plea to Railways on double line

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 10

The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Railway Ministry to undertake implementation of the Chennai-Kanniyakumari double line scheme via Madurai.

In a letter addressed to the Union Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, with a copy to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balsubramanian, drawing attention to the neglect of the double line development projects by the Railways in the State, said trains starting from Chennai to other parts of the country would only benefit the people of Chennai and others bound northwards. Trains must start from Kanniyakumari, he said. There is no train running from Kanniyakumari to other parts of the country due to track constraints, he added.

The linkage and double lining via Madurai could prove a money-spinner for the Railways, as it would witness both passenger movement and freight traffic. Double lining between Chennai and Kanniyakumari is justified and the Railways must undertake the work with provision of more funds and complete the project with in a period of ten years, he said.
