Tuticorin senna exporters' plea

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Oct. 10

The Tuticorin-based Tuticorin Senna Exporters' Association (TSEA) has urged the Union Government to exempt all types of services utilised in the course of export and manufacturing of herbal commodities from the purview of service tax.

According to TSEA Treasurer, Mr Raja Sangaralingam, Tuticorin region has been exporting about Rs 120 crore worth of senna and other herbal products per annum. Due to global competition and increasing costs of input services, the region is turning into a less attractive and competitive arena. In the context, tax exemptions would help augment the exports manifold. The service tax imposed on input services such as fumigation, inspection, forwarding, terminal handling, lorries and courier charges, have led to an escalation in costs.
