Coimbatore , Oct. 4

The Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs, Information, Communication and Arts, Singapore. Dr Balaji Sadasivan, has asked industrialists in Coimbatore to make use of the advancements made by his country in textile and engineering design, the two industries for which Coimbatore is well known.

The Minister, during an interaction here with the CII members, stated that while Singapore might not be cost competitive for establishing manufacturing facilities, industrialists could benefit from the advancements made by the country in textile and engineering design. The industries here could also use it as a hub to reach out to the South East Asian markets and the western region of the US due to its strategic location.

Big increase

The CII, in a press release, quoted the Minister as having said that there had been a substantial increase in not only the number of business travellers between Singapore and Coimbatore region but also tourists in the past two years. Dr Sadasivan said SILK Air was awaiting the Union Government's approval for starting a direct flight between Singapore and Coimbatore.

The Minister said the Singapore Government wanted to establish special economic zones in India.
