Mixed reaction to drug pricing policy

C.R. Sukumar

Hyderabad , Oct. 2

Dr Madhukar Gangadi, CEO of Aushadhi, a leading retail pharmacy chain in Hyderabad and Bangalore, said: "The new drug policy is a step in right direction and is a major boon to the patients. It not only ensures availability of quality but also highly affordable drugs. The capping of wholesale and retail trade margins will also eliminate unhealthy practices currently dominating the marketplace."

Expressing reservations over the policy of regulating drug prices, the President of Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association (BDMA), Mr M. Narayana Reddy, said: "Steps to squeeze the margins through drug price regulation may make drug manufacturing unviable for many players. This will force them to shift towards high-margin drugs that are out of DPCO purview. The end-result will be that the drugs under price regulation may not be adequately available in the market and subsequently, the country may have to meet its requirements through costly imports."
