Campco `Winner' goes to S. Africa

40 tonnes drinking chocolate sent

Mangalore , Oct. 2

The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, which has constituted an export-import cell to identify markets for its commodities overseas and to strengthen its position in the domestic sector, has secured the export order for one of its chocolate products.

The first consignment of 40 tonnes of `Winner' - a drinking chocolate product from Campco stable - was exported to South Africa recently.

The Campco President, Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, told Business Line that Export-Import Cell of Campco has been able to export `Winner' to South Africa.

"If this effort clicks, we may get export order for 70 tonnes of `Winner' every month," he said. If that happens, the production line of `Winner' at Campco's chocolate manufacturing unit at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district can be used to optimum capacity. The product will be marketed under a different brand name in South Africa.

However, Mr Rangamurthy did not give details on the agency distributing the product in South Africa.

Demand for Eclairs

Asked about other products, he said éclairs manufactured by Campco were in a good demand across the country. "In fact, we are not able to meet the demands for éclairs," he said.

In the domestic market, the chocolate products of Campco have witnessed a growth of 15 per cent during the current fiscal as against the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Campco has set up an export-import cell with the aim to compete with other players in the import-export market for its commodities and to protect the interests of its members. The cell has been given the task of identifying markets for cocoa butter and other cocoa products.
