Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 29

The Union Government has released a free sale quota (FSQ) of 16 lakh tonnes (lt) for sugar mills to offload during the coming festival month, which will see a spurt in demand on account of both Diwali and Id.

The FSQ sugar of 16 lt for October is 14.3 per cent higher than the release of 14 lt made in the same month of last year.

Unsold quantity

According to an official release, the entire 16 lt quota would have to be sold within October and any unsold quantity at the end of the month will automatically be converted into levy sugar for the public distribution system.

For the October-December quarter as a whole, the FSQ release has been pegged at 41 lt, which is 10.8 per cent more than the 37 lt for October-December 2005.
