Software States - Karnataka Bangalore sees small dip in investments Our Bureau
Over 300 companies, including 175 from abroad, are expected to participate in this year's BangaloreIT.in. The focus will be on SMEs.
Bangalore , Sept. 28 Investments by information technology firms in Bangalore saw a flattish growth in the first five months of current financial year, while software exports from Karnataka grew 28 per cent in the same period over corresponding last year. Mr B.V. Naidu, Director, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Bangalore, said about 68 new companies have set up their operations by investing Rs 1100 crore during the first five months compared to 72 firms investing Rs 1200 crore in corresponding period last year. Of the 68 new firms, about 40 are 100 per cent foreign equity firms, he said. Mr Naidu attributed the slowdown in investments to the growing base of IT firms in Bangalore. "The interest from the technology firms to invest here is still high," he said. Business Objects Software India Pvt Ltd, Northern Operating Services Pvt Ltd, RSA Security India Pvt Ltd, Marvell India Pvt Ltd, GoodRich Aerospace Services Pvt Ltd are among the STPI-approved firms, which have set up operations in Bangalore.

The Ninth Edition of the four-day technology event BangaloreIT.in would begin on October 27, Mr Naidu said. Over 300 companies, including 175 from abroad are expected to participate this year, he said. In all, nine pavilions would be there and special focus would be on Small and Medium Enterprises. While seven countries have confirmed their participation, more would follow he said, adding that as many as nine States would have representation at the show. The event would also highlight the importance of technology parks in the country, especially with the centre opening up special economic zones. Karnataka's Principal IT Secretary, Mr Anup K. Pujari, said Bangalore Unwired, a project to provide wireless Internet connectivity to the entire city using Wimax technology would be a reality within a year. Five of the 13 bidders have been shortlisted for the project by a committee headed by Prof S. Sadagopan of the Indian Institute of Information Technology. Further, a request for proposals (RFPs) would be sent to these firms of which two would be short-listed, he said adding a pilot wireless Internet facility would be functional before the start of BangaloreIT.in.
