Four Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been shortlisted for the $1-million Alcan Prize for Sustainability. The international prize is given every year to recognise not-for-profit civil society and NGOs that have made contributions to integrate economic, environmental and social sustainability for the benefit of present and future generations.

Alcan, a minerals management company, and The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) short-listed on Wednesday the names of the four Indian NGOs, apart from six others worldwide, for the 2006 prize. The four Indian NGOs are Teri (The Energy & Resources Institute), Naandi Foundation, The Barefoot College and International Development Enterprises.

Ten NGOs were selected from almost 200 entries from 55 countries around the world, and now face a final consideration by an international Adjudication Panel.
