Chennai , Sept. 28

It is important to be an all-rounder who excels in studies, sports, communication and extra-curricular activities than a first-ranker restricted only to knowledge of the subject, Mr V.A. George, President, India Cements Capital & Finance Ltd, told commerce students of Stella Maris College here.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Business Line Club, Mr George urged the students to look at courses and skills that would aid them in their careers. They could do well to equip themselves with knowledge of computers, learn a foreign language or two and start preparing for courses such as chartered accountancy and company secretaryship, he said. "Chasing No 1 is the biggest mistake one can make in life," he added.

Mr George believes life today is very complicated because of the number of choices available.

"Something is missing in life because we are not focused. All of us multitask, and that results in mediocrity," he said. "Judge whether what you do is giving you value for your effort, money and time. Start prioritising," he said.

Like the eagle, set standards high, Mr George said. It is the only bird that loves storms and weathers them, and one would do well to learn from it and face crises with courage, which will hone the character, he added.

Prof Leema Francis, Head of the Commerce Department, and Mr S. Sridhar, Assistant Regional General Manager (Circulation), The Hindu, Chennai, also spoke.
