Agri woes

This is with reference to "A failure on the farm" (Business Line, September 15): The article has elaborated on the long list of farm woes. However, the Chinese lessons are inappropriate for a variety of ecological, socio-politico-economic reasons.

The rising social tensions accompanied by wider rural-urban differentials in China cannot be the strategic choice for Indian agriculture.

A new farm policy is said to be in the offing. Farmers have been forced to leave the countryside to work elsewhere. Has there been an honest evaluation of whether the funds allocated to rural development have reached the beneficiaries? K. K. Lakshmanan
