Manipal Heart launches centre for preventive cardiology

Bangalore , Sept. 25

Manipal Heart Foundation has said it has introduced a Comprehensive Centre for Preventive Cardiology and Hypertension with dedicated doctors and support staff.

The centre headed by interventional cardiologist, Dr Prathap Kumar, offers a package of consultation, health education and preventive measures such as dietary advice, yoga, spiritual guidance, prayer sessions, meditation, exercise, as also inter-personal and family harmony classes, according to a release.

The centre will involve ECG, Echo, TMT and CV profile while the participants will get advice on how to beat stress and manage conflicts in their lives.

Dr Nagendra Swamy, Medical Director, Manipal Hospital, was quoted as saying, "Heart diseases are a major emotional and economical strain on the patient and his family. Research data from Ford Motor Company, Stanford University and National Institutes of Science, USA, have estimated that each dollar spent on preventive measures can save up to $10 on curative aspects. This proportion is higher in India given the much lower costs of preventive medicine and prohibitive costs of treatment."

Among the target groups of the Heart Foundation, according to Dr Prathap Kumar, Director, Cath Lab Service of the Foundation, are executives in MNCs, IT companies, media, finance and public sector corporations; these are the sectors where a high degree of efficiency is expected leading to high burnout rates and early incidence of cardio-vascular problems. Insurance agencies can also include risk strategies for entry-level policy holders to influence their lifestyles, he said.
