The Hindu Business Line : IBM India opens fourth centre in Kolkata

Kolkata , Sept 21

IBM India has augmented its global delivery capacity in Kolkata by opening its fourth facility in the city.

Located in the DLF IT Park at New Town Rajarhat, the facility is spread over five-lakh sq ft and will house 3,000 new employees when it is fully staffed.

With 4,000 existing employees, Kolkata houses IBM India's second largest pool of employees after Bangalore.

On an all-India basis, IBM India's workforce has gone up to 43,000 as of June 2006.

The new facility will enable IBM India to scale up its existing application services delivery capabilities in India in keeping with clients' needs, it has been stated.

IBM has also drawn up plans to ramp up its technical talent in areas such as SAP, mainframe, Web technologies and business consulting at the new centre.

Inaugurating the new facility, the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, asked IBM and like companies to set up training centres in the State to help bridge the gap between what is taught in engineering institutes and the requirements of industry. He invited companies like IBM to invest and partner in the development of the State.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director of IBM India, said the new facility at Kolkata "will further augment our vast global delivery network that spans three dozen countries including India that deliver high value solutions to help our clients innovate globally".
