Orlando , Sept. 21

Data warehousing and analytics major Teradata said that it has shipped an enhanced version of the Teradata database running on the 64-bit version of the SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell. This is now available globally for enterprise-class warehouses.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise platform provides a full range of industry-leading Linux services to support large-scale enterprises, and is a solution for enterprise customers who are considering the move to an open source operating system, noted a statement from Teradata.

Teradata said it now delivers the same features of scaleability and manageability with 64-bit SUSE Linux Enterprise operating system, as with the Windows operating system and its own UNIX operating system UNIX MP-RAS.

Teradata also announced the availability of Teradata Warehouse 8.2. This the company described as a suite of software, hardware and consulting services that builds on capabilities to infuse real-time intelligence into front-line operations.

"In addition to supporting our strategic mission for delivery of real-time enterprise intelligence, Teradata has incorporated 44 enhancements and new features into Teradata Warehouse 8.2," said Mr Scott Gnau, Vice-President and General Manager, Teradata Research & Development.

To integrate with the enterprise Teradata has also adopted Microsoft.Net architecture with the release of the .Net Data Provider and also released the 64-bit Open Data Base Connectivity Driver, creating a bridge between Teradata and applications.

It has also developed an interface for its data-loading utilities for Java Message Service, an industry-standard enterprise messaging system.

The new version also incorporates key product refinements identified by industry-leading customers that rely on their active data warehouse, said the company.

As to how active data warehouses can increase the predictability of queries, the company gave this example: a financial services company with an active data warehouse was able to use its transaction data to evaluate customers.

Selected transactions triggered messages to be sent to branch managers or telephone customer services representatives with recommendations for customised product offers, resulting in improvement in sales

Teradata additionally announced the expansion of its managed services portfolio. Traditional managed services included the delegation of operational responsibility for information technology to a vendor for such tasks as management of servers, storage, backup and recovery, and security, noted a statement from the company. The expanded portfolio provides monitoring and maintenance of data management and decision support capabilities of the data warehouse and analytic applications, it said.

"Businesses demand more from managed services than from traditional systems administration," said Mr Dave Klumb, Vice-President for Teradata Professional Services. To deliver managed services, Teradata has opened global consulting centres staffed with consultant specialists.
