`The rule on peak hour restriction was applicable only in case of industrial consumers and not commercial users.'

Coimbatore , Sept. 19

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association (TECA) has requested the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to adopt a slew of measures to bring relief to its industrial customers.

Compensation

In a statement, Mr S.V. Arunachalam, President, TECA, Coimbatore, said instead of compensating the loss suffered by the TNEB due to free power supply to farmers and subsidised power supply to domestic consumers, the Government expected the board to make up the loss through high tariff for industrial users.

Tariff

He said while the industrial units had to pay a minimum charge on connected load, irrespective of whether the units were functioning or not, this was not done so in the case of commercial consumers.

The rule on peak hour restriction was also applicable only in case of industrial consumers and not commercial users. The industrial units were asked to pay double caution deposit for getting connection in rented buildings.

He said that it was learnt that the board was selling power to Power Trading Corporation (PTC) and another company at Rs 2.80 per unit.

HT-LT ratio

Instead of selling power at a low price, if the board supplied power to industries at the same price it would help in starting more industrial units. Mr Arunachalam said the `HT-LT ratio is the worst in Tamil Nadu'. While the ideal ratio HT-LT ratio should be 1:1, in Tamil Nadu it was around 1:4. By installing more transfers in domestic areas, the quality of power could be improved. He also drew attention to the fact that while the wheeling charges for power generated by windmills was 5 per cent, it was 15 per cent for other sources. He lauded the board for its efforts in making Tamil Nadu power-surplus and for its achievement in rural electrification.
