Chemtech move to standardise research, trial practices

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Sept. 19

Chemtech Foundation has initiated the Info-GCP (Indian Forum for Good Clinical Practice), a forum for standardising the clinical research and trial practices, on the lines of the European Forum for Good Clinical Practice.

"The effort is aimed at bringing the industry stakeholders together. Today there are a number of challenges confronting this sector," says Mr Jasu Shah, Chairman, Chemtech Foundation.

In a telephonic interview to Business Line, Mr Shah said the three-decade-old Chemtech Foundation was compelled to rewrite its charter from an industry association for technology transfer and upgradation in the 1970s to keep pace with the present-day requirements.

"In 2005, we embarked on four major initiatives including that of Info-GCP, as we envisioned that the pharmaceutical and the biotechnology industries were poised for substantial growth and were in the midst of opportunities and challenges.

"With Indian pharma companies going global, we should no longer look only at generic drugs," he saidHe said the clinical research trials were heading towards India and China, because of the low cost of research in these countries and the rising population.
