Outlook States - Tamil Nadu BMW targets sales of 1,000 units in first year S. Muralidhar
Munich, Sept. 17 The BMW's Chennai plant will have an annual capacity of 1,700 units working on a one-shift basis. The company is targeting sales of 1,000 units in the first year (2007) of operations. After the launch of the 5 Series in June next year, sales to match the full capacity of the plant are being targeted for the next full year of operations. The sales mix is expected to comprise the 5 Series contributing a massive 50 per cent and only 30 to 40 per cent is expected from the 3 Series. CBU imports are expected to contribute for the remaining 10 to 15 per cent of the sales volume. BMW already has a presence in the Indian market and is currently selling its cars through authorised importer dealers. The Indian subsidiary will now takeover the task of importing, marketing and handling product launches etc. As part of its plans for the Indian market, the company is planning to expand its dealer network. In the first phase, the company is planning to have at least one dealer in the top 10 metros.
