Nabard to hike aid to SHGs

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development plans to support creation of 1.5 lakh self-help groups and provide credit to 1.25 lakh more groups during 2006-07 in Tamil Nadu, according to Mr K.V. Raghavulu, Chief General Manager, Nabard.
Addressing a press conference on the bank's programme for the year, Mr Raghavulu said that in 2005-06, a total of 81,244 SHGs were formed and 93,270 credit-linked. In Tamil Nadu, there are over 3.15 lakh SHGs that have received over Rs 2,345 crore as credit support from banks.
Nabard has earmarked Rs 538 crore for Tamil Nadu and Rs 11 crore for Pondicherry for refinancing investment credit for 2006-07.
Entrepreneurial development and marketing are key focus areas among SHGs. The bank has taken up training programmes and arranged marketing support.
One such initiative taking place in Chennai on Thursday would be an exhibition of various products made by nearly 25 SHGs across the State. These include handicrafts, garments and food products, he said.
