KERC final order on power tariff revision by October 15

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 12

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) will pass its final order on power tariff revision before October 15.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr K.P. Pandey, KERC Chairman, said that the Commission would complete its public hearing on the proposals for tariff revision submitted by the electricity supply companies (Escoms), by October 9.

Mr Pandey and other members of the KERC were in Mangalore to conduct a public hearing on power tariff revision. The Commission has already conducted public hearings in Shimoga and Davangere.

Mr Pandey stressed the need for the Escoms to function independently. "Now Escoms are functioning under the banner of KPTCL (Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd), and they should get out of that particular mode," he said.

DIFFERENTIAL TARIFF

Mr Pandey said that the KERC has been saying that there should be differential tariff structure for Escoms. All the five Escoms in the State have submitted independent proposals for tariff revision. But all the proposals are same.

"When you work out revenue realisation and expenditures of these companies individually, you will come to know that the gap of all the companies is different. When the gap is different, tariff should be different," he said.

It may be politically convenient to have one tariff throughout the State. But it is not in the interest of the consumers of the company concerned and the company itself. Some company may be losing in that way, realising less revenue where the tariff should be more, Mr Pandey said.

"There should be a differential tariff that is what the KERC has been saying," he said, adding that some consumers of Mescom (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company) and Bescom (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) are seeking different tariff for their company.
