Engineering design contest

Our Bureau

Chennai, Sept. 12

The southern section of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) India, along with Satyam Computer Services, said that it would organise an engineering design contest for engineering students at Crescent Engineering College, Chennai. Addressing the media, Mr M.S. Kumar, Senior Vice-President of SAE India and Chairman and CEO, Precimax Tech, said, "This is to be held on September 17.

Participants would get one day to design and create a cart, using specified material that would carry a predetermined load." Models would be evaluated for concept, modelling, prototyping and on the test run, which would be held the next day.

Fifty teams from 25 colleges are to participate in the event, he said. Mr Subu D. Subramananian, Director and Senior Vice-President, Satyam Computers, said, "We want to encourage students to think in terms of design. We are also interested in making the best of opportunities to, not only provide design services, but also manufacturing services that we could provide with partners." He said that in some instances Satyam has done this through suppliers based in China. Doing it consistently within India is not too far away, according to him. Satyam has about 3,000 engineers focused on this space. Industry watchers also say that participating in such events would also help IT firms like Satyam build a certain recall with today's students who could potentially become employees later.
