To serve as global hub

Pune , Sept. 12

Sandvik Mining and Construction, a division of the $8-billion Swedish Sandvik AB, launched its new manufacturing facility at its assembly centre here today.

Talking to presspersons, Mr Hakan Kingstedt, Managing Director and President, Sandvik Asia Ltd, and Dr Thomas Schulz, President, Construction Segment of Sandvik Mining and Construction, said the new facility would produce feelers, screeners and jaw crushers of various models. It is also targeting to manufacture new generation of jaw crushers of other models he said, while adding that this facility would serve as the global hub.

Focus on exports

Mr Kingstedt said the new facility would cater to both domestic and export needs. Currently, exports stood at 30 per cent, while the domestic market requirements totalled 70 per cent. He said the mix would be changed so as to cater to 60 per cent exports and 40 per cent domestic market. He, however, ruled out the possibility of making this facility a complete EOU (export-oriented unit).

Recycling plant

Mr Kingstedt said the other expansion plans included the inauguration of the Chiplun cemented carbide recycling plant, scheduled to happen within the next two weeks. The recycling plant would recover precious metals such as cobalt and tungsten from cemented carbide inserts and other solid carbides.

This is a 100 per cent EOU and also has a cobalt powder manufacturing unit at Chiplun. The other plans included expansion at its Patancheru facility in Andhra Pradesh unit and Hosur in Karnataka.

Asked about the investments that were being pumped into the Indian operations, Mr Kingstedt declined to comment on the investment figures. He said a significant amount of investment was being utilised for the different Indian locations. And added that currently the turnover from the Indian operations stood at Rs 1,000 crore.
