Airlines Air Mauritius to increase flights in India Our Bureau
Chennai , Sept. 7
Air Mauritius plans to increase its capacity on India routes to cash in on the booming market here, according to Mr Raj Bhujohory, General Manager, (Australasia, Africa and Indian Ocean), Air Mauritius. He told Business Line that the airline has renegotiated its bilateral agreements with India and can now operate daily flights out of Mumbai and seven flights out of Delhi and Chennai by April 2007. This would be a 70 per cent increase in capacity out of India, he said.
Different routes
The airline is also planning to fly to Bangalore and has obtained the traffic rights. Air Mauritius is also considering the possibility of connecting India and China via Chennai. The airline is planning to set up a call centre in India to improve customer service. Air Mauritius has been operating B767, which has 175 seats, four times a week to Mumbai, twice weekly to Delhi and once a week to Chennai. The airline plans to operate Airbus 340-300 E that will have a seating capacity of 295, with 12 first class, 33 business class seats and 264 economy seats.
Tourism
Tourism is a major industry in Mauritius and had 7.5 lakh arrivals last year (about 30,000 of them were Indians). The total arrivals numbers are expected to double in the next five years, he said. The island has for long been a favourite with honeymooners and film crews, mainly from Bollywood. He said that these numbers are also expected to grow. The increased capacity would help be useful to the business sector, he said.
