Govt taking initiatives to strengthen APSRTC

Hyderabad , Sept. 5

The Andhra Pradesh Government has denied that it is trying to privatise certain routes serviced by the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Kanna Lakshminarayana, Minister for Transport and Cooperation, said the State Government was taking several initiatives to strengthen the corporation.

Keeping tab

Listing those initiatives, he said an enforcement wing would be set up in the corporation to keep tabs on private carriers that were running illegal services. In the first phase, about 50 assistant inspectors would be recruited.

Besides, the Government would give the corporation the flexibility to open new depots or close down certain routes depending purely on business parameters.

On reports in a section of the press that the Government issued an order assigning over 100 important routes to private operators, the Minister said the move was in tune with a Central decision on the public-private mix of bus services. The Central guidelines suggested that five per cent of the services could be privatised in a particular area. He also explained that all the 100 routes were new and not serviced by the RTC.
