Teaserve continues to fetch lower price

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Aug. 31

Teaserve, the world's first e-auctions for tea, continues to post the lowest price of all auction centres in the country.

According to the Tea Board, in the first half of this calendar, producers who sold their teas through the Teaserve auctions in Coonoor received an average price of Rs 44.47 a kg.

Although it was higher than last year's average by Rs 5.79 a kg, it was lower than the corresponding average price obtained by the producers who chose the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA). The price at the CTTA auctions averaged Rs 46.72 a kg - that is Rs 2.25 a kg more than the Teaserve average. Here again, the producers got Rs 6.17 a kg more than last year.

Among the auctions conducted by the seven Tea Trade Associations in different parts of the country, Coonoor fetched the lowest price and Teaserve recorded a price lower than even Coonoor.

Teaserve price was lower than the South Indian average price by Rs 5 a kg. It was lower than the all-India auction price by as much as Rs 18 a kg.

There was a general rise in price this year over the corresponding sales of last year. Thus, the country's average rose by Rs 4.74 a kg to reach Rs 62.14. Coimbatore auctions showed an increase of Rs 2.28 to reach Rs 47.58.

The North Indian auction price averaged Rs 69.84 a kg - up Rs 6.51 over last year.

A reason for the price rise was the lower offer forcing the demand to firm up. The volume sold dropped in all the auction centres except Coimbatore where it rose to 10.6 million kgs from 9.4 million kgs. In Coonoor auctions, the volume sold fell to 17.6 million kgs from 19.4 million kgs. At the Teaserve auctions, the volume sold declined to 6.04 million kgs from 6.67 million kgs.
