The Tamil Nadu Government will acquire 30,000 acres near Vandalur, a Chennai suburb to the south, to develop a satellite city.
The Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, in a statement in the Assembly on Thursday, said that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has identified land on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road, which connects the Old Mahabalipuram Road (IT Corridor) and the National Highway 45 (GST Road).
The authority has identified over 30,000 acres out of the total 1.40 lakh acres there for the satellite city.
Over 13,000 families live in the area identified for the acquisition, Mr Karunanidhi said. The place is ideal for development with land left uncultivated. The landowners will be paid the fair market value for the land, he said.
Infrastructure needs
Residential areas will not be affected and people living in the area will not be evicted. Occupied areas will be integrated with the development of the satellite city and road, water and medical facilities and other infrastructure will be provided.
The proposal is in line with the Government's announcement in the budget to develop satellite cities near Chennai to help relieve the pressure within the city and to meet the needs of the industries coming up there.
Mr Karunanidhi pointed out that the 2001 census showed the city's population was 43.43 lakh and that the Chennai metropolitan area holds over 70.40 lakh people. In the next 20 years the metropolis will have a population of 125 lakh.
