A colleague has been wondering whether awards do make a difference. The question arises from the fact that the former GAIL Chairman, Proshanto Banerjee, was denied an extension on the grounds that his style of functioning alienated his officers. But just two months back, a panel headed by Justice P. N. Bhagwati selected Banerjee for the SCOPE Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to Public Sector Management — Individual Category.

A few months ago, another oil sector chief, Subir Raha of ONGC, was denied a similar extension. Again, his leadership style was cited, but Raha, during his tenure at ONGC, received a number of awards for his performance. The colleague is, thus, confused on what to believe.
