Roadways Industry & Economy - Infrastructure States - Andhra Pradesh Link road from Vizag port ready Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Aug. 29 A major road project connecting the Visakhapatnam port and the city has been completed and it may be declared open officially in a few months' time. The toll rates are to be fixed. This road, costing Rs 114 crore, was taken up as a part of the national project to provide better connectivity to the major ports in the country to facilitate speedy movement of cargo.
Joint Venture
A joint venture between the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and the National Highways Authority of India undertook the project. The work was entrusted to M/s M. Venkata Rao Engineering Company towards the end of 2002. "The road includes a 4.87-km flyover and the rest (7.6 km) is on the ground level. It will soon be opened to traffic. We have plans to set up two toll gates one at the dockyard and the other at Sheelanagar," said Mr K. Srinivasulu, Project Director, NHAI.
FEATURES
Apart from the main flyover, having 126 spans, nineteen minor bridges and three ramps have been constructed as a part of the project. "The flyover had to be constructed on loose soil and pile foundation technique was adopted. It was time-consuming," said Mr Venkata Rao, Contractor. The road was temporarily used earlier this year in February, but it was subsequently closed to traffic. Work on providing lighting on the road, taken up at a cost of Rs 1 crore, is in progress. The road links the industrial area and the port to the one town and it also cuts short the distance between the airport and the one town area. It removes several traffic snarls.
