Mumbai , Aug. 25 Apple Computer is recalling 1.8 million batteries that use Sony's battery cell technology due to safety concerns, senior officials said. The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4, said officials. The affected batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard, the company officials said. Apple has now joined Dell in recalling batteries. Last month, Dell had recalled 4.1 million batteries used in laptops.
Recall process
To help in the recall process, customers of Apple will be asked for the serial number of their iBook G4 or PowerBook G4, the serial number of the battery and if the battery is found defective. Customers can use this link to check their battery recall https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/. The serial number will be found on the battery and if the first five digits of the battery fall within the noted ranges, customers can place order for the replacement immediately. Apple will send replacement batteries free-of-cost within 4-6 weeks of time. Customers are requested to use the prepaid shipping label that they will receive to ship the recalled battery to Apple for proper disposal. Apple had made a recall in May 2005. The company recalled 1.28 lakh batteries used in its PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 laptops.
