Agri-Biz & Commodities - Wheat
Wheat woes

The fight against rising wheat prices seems to be slipping out of Government hands. The decision to go in for imports has made little impact on domestic prices, leading to a re-think in official strategy.

An enterprising colleague recently came across a note from the Cabinet Secretary ordering coordination between the Press Information Bureau and Doordarshan/All India Radio to ensure that all news bulletins give out the latest information about ship movement and arrival of imported wheat at Indian shores. The expectation is that news about fresh arrivals would dampen speculative pressures and wheat prices would come down.

The problem, however, is that wheat prices shot up in the international market once India's purchase plans became public and since the type of wheat Indians prefer is in short supply.
