ICAR award for DRR scientists

A team of rice scientists led by Dr N. Shoba Rani of the Hyderabad-based Directorate of Rice Research (DRR) has won the ICAR Outstanding Multi-disciplinary Team Research Award in Agriculture and Allied Sciences for 2003-04.

The award recognises the team's contributions to the genetic enhancement of quality rice varieties for high productivity and export. It particularly mentions the development of basmati and other aromatic rice varieties.

The DRR scientists developed and released basmati varieties including Vasumati and Sugandhamati, Mugad Sugandha in Karnataka and Bhogavati in Maharashtra.

BASMATI VARIETIES

The team's efforts have led to the release of 16 export quality basmati varieties, according to a release from the Project Director, Dr B.C. Viraktamath.

The team consisted of Dr S.V. Subbaiah, Dr S.P. Singh, Dr I.C. Pasalu, Dr K. Muralidharan, Dr G.S.V. Prasad, Mr Y. Kondal Rao and Mr A.S. Rama Prasad.

The ICAR has instituted nine awards of Rs 1 lakh each to be given once in two years in seven categories.

The DRR team has won it for the second time. Earlier, they had won for crop improvement for hybrid rice.

Dr Shoba Rani is also a recipient of the outstanding women scientist award given by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

The impact of these research activities has been significant and visible, with tremendous increase in area, production and productivity of basmati rice.

Exports scaled new heights, from Rs 412 crore in the early 90s to Rs 6,696 crore in 2004, the DRR release said.
