Plans to interlink rivers in DK, Udupi

`The Government is also planning to take up the third phase of development work at the Old Mangalore port and to set up a fisheries jetty at Ullal area.'

Mangalore , Aug. 15

The State Government is contemplating building a fisheries harbour at Chitrapur-Kulai area in Mangalore, according to Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Minister for Fisheries and in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district.

Unfurling the tricolour at the Independence Day celebrations here on Tuesday, Mr Shetty said the Government has already renovated the fisheries harbour at the Old Mangalore port at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. Now, the Government is studying the possibility of setting up a fisheries harbour at Chitrapur-Kulai area and also contemplating taking up the third phase of development work at the Old Mangalore port. Added to this, plans are also there to set up a fisheries jetty at Ullal area in Mangalore, he said.

The Government's decision to exempt mechanised fishing boats from State sales tax will help fishermen in the coastal region. They will get a subsidy to the tune of Rs 42 crore. An amount of Rs 97.80 lakh has been disbursed to 326 families of fishermen to build houses.

Interlinking rivers

The Government may also interlink rivers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to tide over water scarcity. Though these districts receive good rainfall, they face water scarcity during summer.

A meeting of officials and experts, which was held in Bangalore recently, has drafted a broad plan for interlinking rivers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Another meeting will be held in Mangalore on August 23 in this regard, he said.

Dr V.S. Acharya, Karnataka Minister for Medical Education and Udupi district in-charge, who hoisted the flag in Udupi, also highlighted the Government's plan of interlinking rivers in these two coastal districts.

TOURISM

Dr Acharya said that special programmes would be formulated to promote the tourism potential of Udupi district. To help tourists visiting St Mary's Island at Malpe in Udupi district, the Malpe Development Committee will construct a jetty at the island.

As part of the Suvarna Karnataka year, the Government is planning to build a cultural complex at Shivarama Karanth Kalagrama at Manipal in the district, he said.

The Government is also committed to implementing the Varahi irrigation project in the district, he added.
