Security `As safe as the weakest link'
The recent news about the terrorist plot against trans-Atlantic airliners once again reminds us not only of the fragility of our supply chains but also of the fact that every one in the chain has the responsibility to do the needful to ensure safety and security. One is only as secure as one's weakest link. A few key questions remain unanswered: How can collaboration be made to work in practice on a sensitive subject like this? How to work with national and international standards? What is the appropriate technology to invest in? How to get security investment into the corporate agenda and keep it there? After all, adoption of proper security measures will cost money. More than 300 government security experts and logistics industry officials will gather in Washington next month to discuss ways to work out comprehensive long-term strategies for cargo security. There will be presentations, panel discussion and round table sessions to focus on the threat perceptions as well as the latest trends on cargo security.
