Standards & Benchmarks Industry & Economy - Beverages Pesticide residue below EU norms: Coke Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 11 For the first time since the pesticide residue in soft drinks controversy broke out, Coca-Cola India issued a statement asserting that there was ``no detectable level of pesticides'' in soft drinks manufactured by it in India when measured against strict European Union standards. "Our soft drinks have been regularly tested and evaluated by a world renowned UK government laboratory, Central Science Laboratories (CSL). All tests show that our soft drinks are below the EU criteria for pesticide residues in bottled water,'' Coca-Cola said.
For clear criteria
Meanwhile, the statement also said that it supports the Government's move to adopt clear criteria for pesticide residues in soft drinks, which are based on scientifically validated testing methods. "We are working with relevant government bodies in India to develop and finalise the criteria along with their associated testing protocols for pesticide residues in soft drinks." Meanwhile, an industry observer pointed out, "Now that Coca-Cola has decided to abide by the Government's decision, it is for the Government to specify as to what exactly the problem is." The source further said that it was not possible for aerated beverages companies to go in for a final product testing method which the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) had been demanding, as there is no technology globally which can do it. "World over, the method adopted is testing the individual ingredients for pesticide residue," he said.
