Kerala notifies cola ban

Aug. 11
The State Government on Friday notified the ban on production and sales of Coca-Cola and Pepsi products through a Government Order.
As per the order, all regional food and health functionaries and food inspectors have been empowered to implement the ban within their respective jurisdictions. However, there was no immediate ban on the other products of the two multi-national companies.
`IN PUBLIC INTEREST'
The Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Ms P. K. Sreemathy, was quoted as saying that the ban has been imposed to protect the public from the harmful effects of pesticides found beyond permissible limits in samples of Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola as reported by the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment.
Meanwhile, agency reports from Delhi said Pepsico was planning to move the Kerala High Court next week against the State Government's decision to ban manufacture and sale of the company's products in the State.
When contacted, a company spokesperson said: "We have not yet received the Kerala Government order. Once we receive it, we will take legal recourse".
The spokesperson declined to divulge more details.
