Rupee gains against dollar

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Aug. 10

The rupee was strong against the US dollar tracking the movement of euro and pound against the greenback. Moderate dollar selling by exporters also helped the rupee to strengthen.

The domestic currency opened strong 46.42/44, touched an intra-day high of 46.38 to finally close at 46.41/42, higher than Wednesday's close at 46.47.

"The home currency opened strong, tracking the movement of major global currencies like the euro and pound," said a dealer at a private bank.

"Intra-day, rumours on security threats at Heathrow airport in London impacted the pound and euro. This caused the rupee to slip to 46.45," he said. "However the rupee gained later in the day as the other currencies recovered against the US dollar," he added.

There was some dollar selling by exporters, which also helped the rupee to gain, he added. In the forward-premia market, the six-month ended at 1.18 per cent (1.19 per cent) and the 12-month ended at 1.23 per cent (1.29 per cent).
