Nilgiris small tea growers' plea

Our Bureau

Coonoor, Aug. 10

The Nilgiris Small Tea Growers' Association has appealed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, to issue necessary instructions to the forest officials to stop harassing the growers when they fell and move silver oak trees from their estates. A delegation of the growers called on the Chief Minister and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate intervention. "We found this necessary because while there is no change in the legal system relating to the felling of silver oak trees, we face untold practical problems from the forest officials," Mr T. Rangaiah, President of the Association, told Business Line.

Silver oak trees are planted in the estates at higher altitude to provide shade for the tea bushes. "These trees are important to provide shade, but they need to be replaced when they grow old. That's why we have to cut these trees," Mr Rangaiah said.
