Tackling AIDS at grassroots level

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 9

In an attempt to engage the grassroots level leadership in fighting AIDS, the First National Convention of Zilla Parishad Adyakshs and Mayors was held at Vigyan Bhawan in the Capital. The convention is a joint initiative mooted by the Union Government, which includes the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Urban Development and Panchayati Raj, National AIDS Control Organisation as well as Parliamentarian's forum on HIV/AIDS and UNAIDS. The convention seeks active participation from the elected representatives of the Panchayati Raj and Nagarpalika institutions. Considering the significant number of HIV infected people in rural areas, the initiative aims to strengthen local response at the grassroots level.
