To give farm loans up to Rs 3 lakh at 4 pc interest rate

Mangalore , Aug. 9

The Karnataka Government, which has introduced farm loans at 4 per cent interest rate, is projecting to disburse Rs 3,200 crore to 13 lakh farmers by the end of the current financial year.

The Karnataka Medical Education Minister and Udupi district in-charge Minister, Dr V.S. Acharya, said this while distributing ration cards to the beneficiaries of the public distribution system under the jurisdiction of Kodibettu gram panchayat in Udupi district on Wednesday.

Till June-end, nearly 2.46 lakh farmers availed themselves of low-interest loans worth Rs 720 crore, he said.

Farmers, fishermen and weavers can avail themselves of loans up to Rs 3 lakh at four per cent interest rate.

Library facility

The Minister said that the Government would provide library facilities at all the gram panchayats in the State. This will be taken up under the `Suvarna Karnataka' scheme.

However, gram panchayats will have to provide rooms for the libraries free-of-cost. Of the 7,500-gram panchayats in the State, only 3,251 have libraries. Of the 147-gram panchayats in Udupi, only 50 will have the library facility. Other panchayats will get the facility on October 2, he said.

The Government will also provide bicycles to girls studying in eighth standard. This facility will be provided to those hailing from families below the poverty line, he said.
