The Hindu Business Line : TN Govt to cancel land allocation to 5 IT cos

The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to cancel the allocation of 123 acres land to five information technology companies by the previous government and to take further action, according to an official press release.

A decision to this effect was taken at the Cabinet meeting on July 20.

According to the release, the land was allocated by the AIADMK Government in a hurry and without proper application of mind.

The then Cabinet on February 25 decided to allocate land belonging to the State-run Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) at Sholinganallur, Kanchipuram District, to Cognizant Technologies (20 acres), Megasoft (25 acres), Benchmark Softech (25 acres), Proton Web (3 acres) and Advance Software (50 acres).

The price was fixed at Rs 48 lakh an acre and a Government order issued on March 1. But since the election code of conduct was imposed, the order was kept in abeyance.

A public interest litigation seeking CBI enquiry into the allocation is pending in the High Court.

Also, an association of ex-servicemen and pensioners has filed a case, according to the release.

(The charge is that land had been allotted at throwaway prices when the prevailing price of an acre stood at a few crore rupees.)
