HP grant for Jadavpur varsity

Jadavpur University of Kolkata has been awarded a "Technology for Teaching Grant" by Hewlett-Packard (HP). The university will receive approximately $ 70,000 worth of technology such as HP Tablet PCs, external storage and optical drives, wireless networking cards and printers. In addition, a stipend of $15,000 would be paid to staff who work on the projects, which have to be completed within 15 months.
A total of five universities in the Asia-Pacific region have been selected for the award from more than 100 nominations that were received for the purpose. The others include Anna University, Chennai; the University of Tokyo, Japan; the University of Canterbury, New Zealand; and the Yonsei University of Korea.
According to Prof. Manoj K Mitra, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jadavpur University, the award will enable the university to set up a mobile learning centre where students who take the M.Tech course in Distributed & Mobile Computing can access content using hand-held computers. The grant will facilitate transformation of teaching by leveraging upon mobile computing and wireless technologies.
