Centre extends tax break for new units in 3 States

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug 3

The Centre has extended the excise duty exemption granted to new industrial units in Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Sikkim till March 31, 2010, from the previous deadline of March 31, 2007.

The Government issued a notification to this effect on Wednesday.

The major incentives under the industrial package for these three Special Category States, implemented originally in March 2003, include a 10-year income tax holiday and excise duty exemption for new and expanding units.

While the income tax holiday was notified up to March 31, 2013, the excise duty exemption was curtailed up to March 31, 2007, following protests from neighbouring States such as Haryana and Punjab, which feared flight of industry from their states to the Special Category States.
