Government - Politics
Media happy, not savvy

Subodh Kant Sahay, Minister for Food Processing, has an excellent PR set up. Be it any festive occasion, journalists are sure to receive greetings from his office. Not only that, most senior scribes were invited to his daughter's wedding in the capital and that it was not a mere formality became clear when the invitation card was followed up with personal calls, as happens in any family wedding.

Yet, the Minister scores poorly with the media, and for good reason. He calls for press conferences late in the evening and turns much after the scheduled time. Perhaps, he is unaware of newspaper deadline pressures; unless it is big news, late copy is hardly likely to be accommodated.

Another Minister looking for media space is Ashwini Kumar of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The press routinely gets releases about his visits abroad, but there is a problem. For, abroad, Kumar talks about foreign policy, something not even remotely connected with his charge.
