To capture information at the police station

Pune , Aug 2

The judiciary now is all set to use digital pen that will capture all the information in the FIR (first information report) as it is, thereby, simplifying the procedure.

Talking to Business Line, Mr Dhananjay Datar, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Impact Systems Pvt Ltd, the implementing agency for the project, said the digital pen and paper technology would be used to capture the information at the police station and the Department of Science and Technology and Ocean Development, headed by the Union Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal, has already given the nod for the implementation of the technology.

An amount of Rs 25 lakh has also been sanctioned for this project by the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC).

He said as a pilot project, three police stations had been shortlisted, D.B. Marg, Colaba and Nagpada, which fall in three different zones in Mumbai.

The implementation for these stations would begin by October and by the fiscal end, six stations would have the systems. According to him, this project is being implemented in a phase-wise manner and the first phase will have the three forms, the FIR form, crime form and arrest form and the second phase will look at the additional forms that can be made available.

"Even scratches on the paper or rubbing of information would be captured by the pen, which would give the judiciary an edge to ensure that false complaints are not entertained," he said.

He noted that similar technology, Magicomm digital pen and paper applications, is being used by the UK police to reduce bureaucracy and save money and put more police force on the street.
