Bangalore , Aug. 2 Sri Lankan apparel exporter Brandix's apparel park in Visakhapatnam is expected to start operations next year. Work on the `Brandix Apparel City' has already begun, Mr Shantha Kurumbalapitiya, CEO, T&S Buttons Lanka, a joint venture company between T&S Buttons, Hong Kong, and Brandix Lanka, said. Brandix, in the initial phase, will invest $750 million and this is expected to touch $3 billion in five years.
Plans for India
The 1,000-acre apparel park at the export processing zone in Visakhapatnam will house manufacturers of textiles, garments and accessories. T&S Buttons Lanka will set up its first factory in India at this park, said Mr Kurumbalapitiya. "India is going to be a large player in the global garment industry and we have great plans for India." He was addressing the media in connection with the three-day Fabrics and Accessories Trade Show in Bangalore from August 4. Over 100 textile and accessory suppliers from countries such as India, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, China and the US are expected to exhibit their products at the fabrics show. T&S Buttons Lanka is one of the participants at the show. Also present at the media briefing were Mr Manish Mandhana, Managing Director, Mandhana Industries Ltd, Mumbai, and Mr Mazher Laila, Chairman and Managing Director, Oxford Industries, Mumbai. Mr Mandhana was optimistic of India's garments and textile exports (currently $17 billion) meeting the target of $50 billion by 2010. "For that, India must develop strategic linkages, create a common infrastructure pool and enhance work skills through training," he said. Mr Laila said India was "backward in the processing industry and lot needs to be done to produce finished products of international class."
