River handles sea of cargo

China's mighty Yangtze river is said to have become the busiest in the world in terms of volume of cargo transported on it thanks to the country's burgeoning economy. In 2005, 795 million tonnes of cargo, comprising domestic traffic, overseas freight as well as containers (2.6 million TEUs), were transported along the Yangtze River's waterways, thus exceeding the traffic throughputs handled by the Mississippi river in the US and the Rhine in Europe, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, quoting official sources.

The throughput is projected to cross one billion tonnes and 4.5 million TEUs by the end of the decade.
