40 pc rise in AP VAT collection

Andhra Pradesh has registered one of the best growth rates in VAT collection in the first quarter ended June 2006. The State registered 40.3 per cent growth with a total collection of Rs 3,384 crore as against Rs 2,412 crore in the same period the previous year.
The other major states that registered impressive growth rates were Maharashtra with 31 per cent (Rs 5,463 crore) and Gujarat 23.4 per cent (Rs 2,738 crore). Smaller states like Manipur, Mizoram and Chattisgarh too recorded good growth rates.
According to a State Government release here on Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh recorded a growth rate of 32.6 per cent in June with collections to the tune of Rs 1,278 crore (Rs 963 crore).
Reviewing the performance of the Commercial Taxes Department, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has directed the officials to evolve an audit mechanism for refund of input tax. He said that the audit services should be honed to refund the amounts.
