The Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Tuesday assured all help to State Governments in curbing activities relating to black marketing and hoarding of essential commodities.
Replying to a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the issue of price rise, Mr Chidambaram appealed to the State Governments to use legislative measures to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
He also said the Centre proposes to bring a Bill on regulation of futures trading in foodgrains in the current session of Parliament. Mr Chidambaram sought the co-operation of the members in getting the Bill passed. "It is high time that a regulator for futures trading in essential commodities was in place, which will work in the interest of farmers," he said.
The Finance Minister also said that some inflation was "unavoidable" in a developing economy such as India. "Prices have been rising because of high demand. There has also been supply shocks that has led to higher prices," he said.
