Bangalore , July 25 Wipro Technologies, the global IT services arm of Wipro Ltd, is floating a joint venture with Motorola to manage telecommunication networks and services for operators. Wipro will hold a majority stake in WMNetServ that will focus on offering services such as network planning and deployment, network optimisation, security, operations and support among others, said Mr A.L.Rao, Chief Operating Officer, Wipro Technologies. The detailed business plan including investments is still being worked out and will be announced by the end of the current quarter, Mr Rao said. The joint venture will have a core team drawn from both companies, Mr Rao said without divulging the specific numbers. However, the joint venture will also leverage the large resource pool of Wipro, he said. Refusing to comment on the revenue projections for this new line of business, Mr Rao said that the pipeline of customers assured by Motorola was "pretty strong". Motorola has been a long-standing customer of Wipro Technologies, which has major exposure to the telecom space. Wipro has been working with original equipment manufacturers in the product engineering space and with operators in the operational and business support and systems. WNNetServ will be headquartered in Europe and have a branch office in London with development centres in Bangalore and New Delhi, said Mr Sudip Nandy, Chief Strategy Officer, Wipro Technologies. WMNetServ would host a Global Network Operation Center (GNOC) platform that would integrate with Motorola's existing NOCs in North America and Europe to provide network monitoring capabilities to customers. The location for GNOC, which would be located in India, is yet to be finalised, Mr Nandy said. WMNetServ will be led by Wipro representative and the Board of Directors will have representation from the senior management of both companies. Wipro shares ended flat after touching an intraday high of Rs 479.40 to close at Rs 469.70 on the BSE. The market for managed services is expected to double to $48 billion by 2010, from $26 billion last year, according to a Mercer Management Consulting report. "Wipro has a proven track record in delivering managed services and complements Motorola's expertise in mobility,'' said Mr Srikanth Kannankote, corporate Vice-President at Motorola in a press release. "The combined strength of Wipro and Motorola gives WMNetServ a significant competitive advantage in managed services."
