The Chennai Chapter of the American Society for Metals (ASM) International plans to set up a research centre for automobile industries here.
To be constructed in phases, the first phase will require an investment of Rs 3 crore and will occupy about 5,000 sq ft.
"We are looking at proximity to industrial estates, primarily Maraimalai Nagar and Sriperumbudur as locations for the centre," said Mr D.G. Sastry, Vice-Chairman of the Chennai Chapter. The centre will focus on failure analysis and testing, besides development of new technology materials and materials testing, he added.
The Chennai Chapter will also start two new student chapters at National Engineering College, Kovilpatti and a college in Pondicherry. The chapter plans to invite doctors and promote bio-materials.
ASM International is spending Rs 63 crore ($14 million) for developing its Web site into a comprehensive one-stop site for information on materials technology, said Mr Pradeep Goyal, Trustee of ASM International. He said the society had approved investments of about Rs 20 crore ($ 4.5 million) this year in research for new technologies and some part of this amount may also come to India.
ASM International is a professional society of metallurgists, materials scientists and technologists.
