Coffee Web Extras - Cultivation Coffee crop estimate cut Our Bureau
Chennai , July 21 The Coffee Board has pruned coffee production for the current season in its final estimate. According to the board's estimate, displayed on its website, the production for the current season to September has been estimated at 2.74 lakh tonnes. This is 8,000 tonnes lower than the post-monsoon estimate of 2.82 lakh tonnes. The post-monsoon estimate itself was pruned from the post-blossom projection of 2.94 lakh tonnes. The production is lower mainly on account of a fall in arabica production by 3,000 tonnes in Karnataka to 76,300 tonnes and robusta production in Kerala by a similar margin to 55,400 tonnes. Robusta production has also been pegged lower in Karnataka by 1,000 tonnes at 1.19 lakh tonnes. In all, Karnataka's output has been estimated lower at 1.96 lakh tonnes against an earlier estimate of 1.99 lakh tonnes. Production in Kerala, on the other hand, has been lowered to 56,825 tonnes from the previous 60,175 tonnes.
According to industry sources, production estimate has been lowered mainly in view of the loss caused by the white stem borer menace on the arabica crop. The robusta crop was hit by heavy rains with the plants developing "wet feet" in some growing areas.
Industry sources said the lowering of the estimate was expected.
