Hyderabad , July 20

The Andhra Pradesh Government plans to establish 10,000 sub-market yards in the State where a cluster of five villages will have one such yard.

This is aimed at facilitating better procurement of farm produce, in effect providing services at the doorstep of farmers. The Government also plans to modernise 110 market yards of the 300 existing with an outlay of Rs 225 crore.

Addressing a press conference, the State Marketing Minister, Mr B. Satayanarayana, said the existing 25 cotton and 12 jute market yards in the State would be modernised under the Cotton and Jute Technology Missions with investment of Rs 26 crore and Rs 18 crore, respectively.

Of the 10,000 sub-market yards, about 1,000 would be constructed this year, each with an investment of Rs 25 lakh and a capacity to handle about 1,000 tonnes. These yards are expected to provide employment to about 7,000 youths.

The Government proposes to set up nine rythu bazaars. It is also poised to develop rythu bazaars in cities such as Hyderabad into supermarkets catering to a variety of consumer goods. A flower market will be developed at Gudimalkapaur.
